Creating a Healthy Society.

Nigel Crisp

How can we create a healthy society? A society which meets our needs. A society where we feel we belong and can live a full and fulfilling life.

This book is about our health and the health of our society – does it work well for each and every one of us – and it’s about the health of our politics and the health of the planet. Each of these is explored in this book.

A healthy society might seem an impossible dream at a time of hyperturbulence when everything around us is changing at once. We are even faced by powerful new technologies which make us question what it means to be human. The very ground beneath us can seem to be giving way under our feet ….

Nigel Crisp argues that working together to create a healthy society will reinforce the importance of human beings and our values and relationships at a time when authoritarian leaders and over-mighty corporations are taking the world in exactly the opposite direction – creating conflict, ill health and inequality and normalising violence and repression.

This essential book makes the case for a far broader view of health: from the individual to the political, social and planetary health. It will restore your faith in the possibility for change by showcasing what people are already doing to create a healthy society…

Dr Dolly Van Tulleken – food policy expert, Chair of Bite Back 2030, IMS Epidemiology, University of Cambridge

In a period where we are experiencing societal ‘hyperturbulence’ across the world, this book offers something rare and vital: practical hope. Beautifully written, Lord Crisp's book moves beyond narratives of doom to map a clear path toward a healthy society and one where people, politics, and the planet can all thrive. Grounded in real-world examples and driven by a profound belief in human agency, this is an essential read for anyone ready to help secure a future that works for all of us. As Lord Crisp writes: "We need to discard old mindsets and behaviours, retaining the best of the past while learning how to thrive in our new environment”

Baroness Kathy Willis FRS, Crossbench Peer and Professor of Biodiversity at the University of Oxford

In an age of hyperturbulence, we must find hope in people and their stories. The pragmatic idealism that made Nigel Crisp perhaps the most successful chief executive of the NHS shines through in this compelling journey to a healthy society. It’s the right prescription at the right time.

Dr Kamran Abbasi, editor in chief of the BMJ

“Meticulously researched and argued with compassion and wisdom. It is challenging but optimistic.”

Dr Xand Van Tulleken, doctor, writer and broadcaster

Nigel Crisp has written the book that the current debate about public services badly need, because he refuses the two available positions: that everything is broken, and that a bit more money would fix it. He offers instead a goal capacious enough to unite people who do not otherwise agree, and evidence that thousands are already working towards it …

Lord Victor Adebowale, Crossbench Peer, Founder of Leadership in Mind and Chair of the NHS Alliance

About the publisher

SALUS Global Knowledge Exchange is a global media, publishing, research and events organisation with a vision to improve human and planetary health by design.

We create, share and disseminate knowledge about the relationship between human health and the natural, built and social environments. Working at the intersection of science and technology, architecture, urbanism, culture and sustainable development, we connect research, policy, investment and practice to advance healthier, more equitable societies.

We believe that human health and the health of our planet are integrally connected. Addressing health inequalities, demographic change and the growing burden of chronic disease requires a shared response to the wider social, economic and environmental forces shaping our lives. Healthy people require a healthy planet.

Our work explores the connections between health equity, planetary health, social value and impact. By bringing together interdisciplinary communities and networks, we promote collaboration, responsible investment and the application of knowledge and innovation to deliver lasting change.

SALUS is the publisher of Nigel Crisp’s Hyperturbulence to Hope: Creating a healthy society and his earlier book, Health is made at home, hospitals are for repairs. It is also the founding organisation of European Healthcare Design and Healthy City Design — two world-leading congresses bringing together international leaders in research, policy and practice to advance the design of healthier healthcare environments, cities and communities.
